From Scribble to Exhibition-Ready Prototype
Central Software Solution for managing and monitoring safety tests on motor vehicle test tracks
Testing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is expensive and time-consuming. But it is also necessary to be able to test their functions under real-life conditions. After all, the lives of all road users are at stake. Special test tracks, known as proving grounds, are reserved for testing these assistance systems. Time is precious there, so smooth operation is of the utmost importance. But until now, the various test teams on the proving ground were not connected in any way, which could lead to costly delays and even accidents.
Humanetics
approached us with the idea of working with them
to develop a software application that would centralise all the relevant information
for a successful test in real time, creating a clearer, more intuitive and secure
software solution.
And that's exactly what we've done with TrackBase Connect!
The footage shown as part of this reference is excerpts from various prototype stages.
One for all, all in one!
Many users, many scenarios, many features
A test track is a complex ecosystem with many different parties involved - from the various test supervisors to the track operators, test engineers and test scenario developers. The list is long, and to ensure that all these wheels work together harmoniously rather than hindering each other, TrackBase Connect acts as a hub through which all parties can connect.
User Research: The foundation of any good design
To accurately capture and efficiently align the diverse needs of different
users, we used LeanScope
to develop realistic personas for each user group. Only through a deep understanding
of the user group is it possible to develop a human-centred design.
Based on our research, we came up with an extensive list of features, some of
which we present below.
Safe management of people and equipment
TrackBase Connect has been specifically designed to manage and track all networked vehicles (or drivables) in real time.
To maximise productivity on the test track, it was essential to have a clear overview of the current position of each vehicle. Test managers must be able to see at a glance whether the chosen section of track is free. We have managed to create a powerful user interface that, despite its extensive features, is clear and easy to use. The result is not only time and cost savings, but also a significant improvement in safety on the test track.
On any device, anywhere, simply in the browser
To make it as easy as possible for test engineers to use the software, TrackBase Connect simply runs through a browser. This provides flexibility in terms of operating system, and we are currently working on a tablet version to make the most of the limited space in the vehicle. It was quite a feat to develop such a powerful browser-based tool.
In the right place at the right time –
Keeping track of all relevant aspects
In ADAS testing, there are many variables that can throw a wrench into the works. Keeping track of all these variables is no easy task. That's why TrackBase Connect gives you all the information you need, when you need it.
The optimal place…
TrackBase Connect will tell you if you are in a suitable location to carry out the test you want. For example, the software will show if the test overlaps with the booked area of other teams. Users can then make real-time adjustments to their test scenario and start the test without delay.
From Scribble to Exhibition-Ready Prototype!
Together with Humanetics, we were able to quickly develop software with a full front-end and go from concept sketches to an exhibition-ready prototype. We were able to contribute all of our expertise, from user research and visual & concept design to UX management and front-end engineering.
The TrackBase Connect user interface was showcased at the ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo 2023 in Stuttgart, Europe's most influential centre for automotive innovation, research and development. The presentation of the prototype at the show marks an important milestone in the long-term development of this comprehensive tool.
Centigrade's approach to digital transformation mirrors our own innovation mindset and commitment to excellence. Their dedication to enhancing business success through UX design and engineering integration has been evident throughout our collaboration. Together, we've successfully developed TrackBase Connect, a software solution that sets new standards in proving ground testing efficiency. We value their dedication to our shared vision and look forward to the continued collaboration.
What's next?
The testing of driver assistance systems is an important topic and will become even more
so in the future, with self-driving cars on the horizon. Our collaboration with Humanetics
is not over yet, and there are more exciting things to come. We are proud to be part of such
a forward-thinking project and look forward to working with them in the future.
To be continued!
